Protecting children – beyond the online world

September 16, 2008 · Leave a Comment

How do we protect our children?

With stories like this, the task of protecting our children can seem daunting and even impossible.

Protecting children today, goes far beyond warning them of the windowless van offering candy at the playground.

What are some things you can do to protect your children….

  • Listen to them!  You child’s words are of great importance. The car is a great place to speak with your child.  Turn down the radio and listen to them!  Ask about their day, their school, and their friends.  The more people about what is going on in their life, the more you can monitor it.
  • Make sure your children know about the “swim suit” rule.  Your child should know that NO ONE should ask to see or touch any area that would be covered with a swim suit.  Also, no one should ever show them their “swim suit” parts.
  • Know the people that spend time with your child.  Make an effort to meet teachers, friends, parents of friends, and coaches.   Come a little early to if you are picking your child up from a practice or youth event.  It will give you great insight to see how your child interacts with adults and other children in the group.
  • Listen to your children.  If they seem to be uncomfortable regarding a certain situation or person, pay close attention.  Your child’s discomfort could be a major red flag.
  • Finally, look for changes your child’s attitude.  A sudden desire to spend time alone, neglect of personal hygiene, or drop in school performance is usually an indicator that something is up.  If you see a change like this in your child, contact their school.  Find out if teachers are observing the same.  A school counselor may be able to help address the situation and get your child back on track.

SeeNoEvil is here to provide the tools to monitor your child online, but we know their is so much more responsible parents must do.  We commend you for your efforts to keep your children safe, happy, and healthy in this unpredictable world.  We are honored to partner with you and your family!  Together we can make this a better, safer, and more humane world!
